M&M 2018

Baltimore,MD

As part of M&M 2018 symposia, The Microscopy Society of America partnered with different organizations and professors to provide educational workshops to teachers and the community in general. Inspire Stem Education was part of the X90 workshop with Michael Boyer from North Penn High School Engineering Academy.

Local educators and registered conference attendees were invited to participate in presentations, round table discussions, and demonstrations of effective strategies for microscopy outreach and education from K-12 and post-secondary classrooms. The session Demonstrated how microscopy in education serves as an important learning tool for inspiring our future STEM professionals.

The Session focused on best practices for incorporating microscopy into classrooms, and different methods to expose students to microscopy in a fun, engaging and impactful manner. Mr. Boyer, during his presentation, expressed the point that his findings with his students that as technology advances student research is growing in complexity. The sooner students are exposed to elemental analysis and learn to analyze and adjust the sooner they will be ready to an ever changing world.

Some of the feedback he has had from his students is as follows.

“I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to continue along the STEM track and for providing so many awesome opportunities for students.”

“I found out today that I was awarded an undergraduate research fellowship for materials science and engineering! I’ll be researching polymer membranes for water filtration!!! I’m so excited!”

“I wanted to let you know how grateful I am for all the experiences you have given me and the sacrifices you made/continue to make for students. I am finishing my time at Drexel this June, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, and I can honestly say that I would not have made it if it wasn’t for all your efforts, support, and dedication to teaching.”
